Intro
This family-friendly winter hike not only has magnificent views of the Matterhorn and other four-thousand-metre peaks, but also has a lot to offer culturally and historically. The trail leads along the edge of the forest and historic bisses to Alpe Äbnet. The Egga chapel offers insights into the village’s history.
Description
Grächen is located above the Mattertal Valley on a broad sun terrace. The village centre is home to typical Valais wooden houses, which have been almost blackened by the sun. The scenery in Grächen boasts fourteen four-thousand-metre peaks, including the world-famous Matterhorn. Starting from the village square, the path climbs for a short distance among chalets and past the sports centre. When the path meets the edge of the forest, it turns left sharply. During the hike, the views of the village are beautiful, especially if there’s fresh snow on the ground. You can see the Weisshorn from Lake Grächen, while Grächen specialities are on the menu at the Restaurant Zum See.
The route continues on a flat course through the idyllic, snow-covered forest. After walking along the two bisses of Drieri and Eggeri, you will reach Alpe Äbnet. A total of four bisses – open water channels – can be found in Grächen. There is little rainfall in the area, which is why the bisses were and still are used to direct the water towards the fields from the Ried glacier and stream. The exact age of the irrigation system in Grächen is unknown. The first written records date back to the 12th century, and the Eggeri is presumed to be the oldest bisse.
From Alpe Äbnet, where Herens cows graze in the summer and the famous cow fights take place, winter hikers will cross the valley piste and hike down to Ritti and further into the district of Egga. On the way, you can stop in the chapel in Egga for insights into the history of Grächen. At the entrance to the village, the icing on the cake is looking back at the king of the mountains, the Matterhorn.
