Appenzeller Weg
Overview
Intro
Crossing the border, the Appenzellerweg leads from the pilgrimage place of Rankweil in Vorarlberg to the Toggenburg monastery village of St. Peterzell. Following old pilgrimage routes, the European culture trail crosses the culturally and scenically unique Appenzell region.
Description
As a European cultural trail, the Appenzellerweg takes St. James pilgrims from Austria to Switzerland in three days. The route links Rankweil, the most important place of pilgrimage in honour of the Virgin Mary in Vorarlberg, with the charming monastery village of St. Peterzell in Neckertal.
Following old pilgrimage routes, the path leads east-west and with ever-changing views through the Appenzell region. Quiet chapels, large and small rivers, near-to-nature alps, typical farmhouses and hospitable inns all wait to be discovered. Canton Innerrhoden’s main town Appenzell lies along the way as do the villages of Gonten, Urnäsch and Schönengrund, with typical painted «citizens’ houses» and many culturally worthwhile sights.
The Appenzellerweg is straight but rises and falls with height differences of 400 to 1100 metres along pleasant field and forest paths. The Alpsteinmassiv is almost always in view – and always different. At Vorarlberg, the Appenzellerweg joins the Arlbergweg and Walgauweg coming from Innsbruck.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
