Intro
Easy winter loop hike with beautiful views of the mountains surrounding Ilanz. The trail leads across some meadows and along the Anterior Rhine through peaceful forests and nature reserves. Starting in Ilanz you can explore the first part of the Rhine Gorge, the riverside landscape and other cultural highlights.
Description
The hike leads from Fontanivas across the suspension bridge to a wide, scenic meadow landscape. Past Sevgein and around the Castrisch castle mound, the path descends to the Isla Sut nature reserve at the entrance of the Rhine Gorge, or Ruinaulta, as it is called in Romansh. From the peninsula on the Anterior Rhine it is not far to Castrisch with its picturesque village centre. A cultural highlight is the Evangelical church of S. Gieri. The church tower from the 14th century is under landmark protection. A lovely hiking path takes you from there through peaceful riverside forests and nature preserves along the Anterior Rhine, accompanied by a magnificent backdrop that includes the Brigelser mountains and Piz Mundaun. On the outskirts of Ilanz you follow the Glenner River for a while to get back to the starting point.
A detour to Ilanz before or after the hike is almost a must. The old town is one of the cultural highlights of the Surselva region: charming narrow lanes, impressive mansions, valuable buildings from the 16th and 17th century, tall city walls and the richly adorned and painted Obertor (upper gate) as well as the church of St. Margarethen , which played an important role in Graubünden’s reformation, are all worth visiting.
