Intro
Initially along the Borgnes river, then up into the villages high on the cliffs. Typical homes, barns and chapels are found around Evolène in a protected landscape with views across the mountains and the untamed Val d’Hérens. And finally, a section of the trail with paintings and poetry.
Description
The route begins in Evolène. From the wetlands area on the left banks of the La Borgne River, it follows a small road between trees and the water. Shortly before the two Borgnes merge, Borgne de Ferpècle from the southeast and Borgne d’Arolla from the southwest, you cross the river and arrive in the village of Les Haudères. It is surrounded by lovely pine forests. The typical wooden chalets are particularly charming here, each with a different look, with flowers and small gardens.
At the end of Les Haudères the path climbs along several switchbacks up the impressive mountain terraces. La Forclaz is one of four so-called “villages on the rocks” that this hike will explore. It is situated at the foot of the Val d’Hérens, one of the most pristine and authentic valleys in the central Valais region. Next is La Sage. It’s impossible to miss the baroque chapel St. Christopherus from the 14th century perched on the hill above the hamlet. The views from La Sage of the mountains and the valley are breathtaking.
The typical agricultural and architectural heritage of this region can be experienced in a fantastic environment in all the villages on the rocks: houses, stables, wheat barns, chapels, garrets made of larch wood, and slate roofs. Until we reach Villa we follow the Contemplative Trail (Sentier Contemplatif) with poems and watercolours by Francine Carrillo, an artist and poet living in La Sage. And finally, through the forest back to Evolène near the via ferrata.
