Des Franches-Montagnes au Doubs
Overview
Intro
From the Freiberge Mountains to the banks of the Doubs. From Noirmont, the trail in the Doubs Nature Park descends down to the river and up to Sommêtre ridge, a narrow, steep cliff dropping into the valley. The views across the Doubs Valley and of the French Jura are very scenic.
Description
Le Noirmont extends along the Freiberge plateau, at the edge of the deep Doubs valley, and this is where the walk is heading, starting at the train station. The route leads downward through the forest and joins the river in Goule, near the power plant. A restaurant with a marvellous view of the water is just a few steps away.
The trail then continues relatively flat along the Doubs, which forms the border between Switzerland and France. On this section, the river is all French. At Restaurant le Theusseret, where the route turns and the climb begins, the famous trout is served with a view of the waterfall near the dam. Invigorated by the delicious meal, we climb up the mountain trail to the village of Chez-le-Bolé. This part in the forest is very steep and slippery and therefore secured with chains and a few short ladders. The Blanche-Eglise rock shelter should not be missed. The path continues at the foot of Les Sommêtres ridge. This place is quite popular with rock climbers.
At the end, there is an opportunity for a tour to the ruins of Spiegelberg castle. In the Middle Ages, a fortress was built on the razor-sharp ridge by the Lords of Spiegelberg. Because the drop of the hillsides is almost vertical, the fortress was believed to be unassailable at that time. Today a refuge hut is located at the same place. It’s a good idea to take a break up here: The Sommêtre ridge is one of the breeziest and most scenic spots in the Canton Jura with a marvellous view over the Doubs Valley, to France and of part of the Freiberge Mountains. On the return to the Le Noirmont train station, the trail passes the Crauloup forest cabin and the rehabilitation clinic Roc Montès. A stroll through the village is another highlight with the old church, now a cultural centre, and the modern architecture of the new church.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
