Dreiland-Wanderweg
Overview
Intro
The route begins with a detour into the neighbouring country, making a wide arc around Basel. The hike is marked by impressions along the Rhine, variety in the Markgräfler vineyard region and constantly changing views of the city.
Description
The Three Countries Corner of Germany / France / Switzerland, is a transnational region and the Dreiland-Wanderweg is likewise transnational. The route starts and ends at the ship jetty in the centre of Basel. Similar to a panoramic hike, the route makes a wide arc around the city of Basel via three legend-shrouded hills - St. Margarethen, St. Chrischona and Ober-Tüllingen. These vantage points afford impressive views of the city from constantly changing angles.
As a contrast to the urban area, vineyards dominate the route in Markgräflerland and grapes flourish in this sun-kissed corner of Germany. The Gutedel grape grows particularly well. Also known for their wines are the stately wine-growing village of Haltingen and nearby Ötlingen, both parts of the town of Weil am Rhein. Many of the buildings in their historic centres are listed.
Just outside Basel, a small detour takes you to the Krebsbachtal natural reserve. Located at the tripoint where the borders of Switzerland, France and Germany meet, the massive Three-Countries-Bridge connects Weil am Rhein with Huningue. The French riverside path with its sweeping views of the Rhine and the impressive port facilities leads you back to Basel Schifflände.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
