Gspon Trail
Overview
Intro
A snowshoe experience at a height of over 2,000 metres above sea level: the trail leads through the mountain pastures of Gspon, offering virtually uninterrupted views of the village and imposing mountain landscapes. To cap it off, the route goes past Europe’s highest football stadium.
Description
High above the Vispertal Valley, the sunny plateau in Gspon is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the surrounding nature and the magnificent scenery of the Valais and Bernese Alps. The characteristic storehouses and Valais houses with their flagstone roofs lend the Staldenried-Gspon region its charm. This easy circuit tour is perfect for wintertime when the Gspon pastures are exposed to the sun, allowing you to soak up the warmth. It is also suitable for children who already have some experience outdoors on similar terrain.
The Gspon trail starts from the Staldenried-Gspon cable car mountain station in the direction of the Ottmar Hitzfeld Arena. Located at a height of 2,000 metres, it transforms into Europe’s highest football stadium in summer. The Bergdorf-EM football tournament, which has taken place since 2008, is the village’s answer to the official UEFA European Championship. It attracts amateur football teams from all across Europe. Once you’ve arrived at the top, an easy path will take you underneath the Gspon ski lift valley station and towards the hamlet of Summerhüs. From here, the route briefly goes downhill and then back up towards the high-altitude trail via Ze Hiischinu. The trail will loop back around in the forest.
You’ll be swept away time and again by the natural beauty of Valais’s typical winter landscape, with views of Gspon almost every step of the way. From Grifolegga, the trail leads to Wierli under the canopy of the forest via a pleasant and well-developed path. Here, we recommend taking a break to soak up the peace and quiet of the surrounding nature, stopping to enjoy the wonderful panoramic views of the mountains at the barbecue area or one of the picnic spots. The last part of the trail towards Scheidbodo, Waldegga and back again promises to be a diverse, pleasant tour in the snow. And how does a traditional Gspon coffee sound to end the day?
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
