Intro
Moderately difficult day tour with a short ascent to the Torrentalp and beautiful views of numerous 4000m peaks. A splendid single trail winds through a section of forest that was destroyed by a fire in 2003.
Description
The tour starts in the village centre of Leukerbad, famous for its thermal baths, which you pass right at the beginning. The hot springs have been bubbling here since Roman times. First you take an even path to the so-called Albinen ladders. These used to be the only trade connection between Leukerbad and Albinen, but today they are part of an adventurous hiking trail.
A tarmac road with a pleasant gradient continues to the bottom station of the Flaschen cable car. During the steady ascent on the alpine road, you have the highest point of the tour in view ahead of you: Torrentalp, which is located above Albinen. The panorama displays the imposing rock arena in the west and most of the 4000-metre peaks of the southern alps. Shortly before you get there, the restaurant at the middle station of the cable car offers an opportunity for a refreshing break. From Torrentalp, you continue along a pleasant high-altitude trail until you reach "Undru Guggerhubel", another vantage point and eponym of the tour.
Now comes the highlight: the descent to Guttet-Feschel on the single trail. It is relatively easy to ride and passes through the Hewald forest, which was destroyed by fire in 2003. On the road past Wiler, at the transmission antenna, you change to a historic trail which winds its way down to Oberrotafen in tight bends. A final climb is followed by the last single-trail descent to Leuk. Through the culturally and historically interesting town and past the castle, you descend to the Rhone. The finish point is just across the river at the Leuk/Susten train station.
