Hospental Trail
Overview
Intro
Following the footsteps of the muleteers, this short and technically simple circular trail affords a variety of views into the Ursern Valley. Start and finish at Hospental with its striking Tower of the Lords.
Description
After setting out from the Hospental train station, you soon cross the Gotthardreuss and the Furkareuss with its old arched bridge. These two streams converge a little further to the north.
Following the footsteps of the muleteers of old, you follow the historic Furkaweg and cross an idyllic valley. At the end of the valley there is a short ascent that runs up to the top of the Bielenboden plateau. Soon you pass a few old barns and make a gentle descent to Moos and cross the striking ridge at Steg. With a loop, the trail, which can also be covered in the evenings with the appropriate equipment, reaches the banks of the Furkareuss once again before following the stream back to the Hospental train station.
It is well worth stopping off at the last village before the Gotthard Pass. In the days of the muleteers, Hospental was the most important village in the valley and therefore the main town. Today there are still rows of beautiful old buildings here. The village with its dominant tower is heritage-protected. The Tower of the Lords was built in the first half of the 13th century. The Lords of Hospental were builders. Until the 15th century, it served as a residential tower. Of this once large complex, now only the moat on the west side remains. These well-preserved ruins can be visited.
