Intro

In Austria and Germany, the route leads over Innsbruck and Rosenheim through to Dreiflüssestadt Passau. Inn, once a significant traffic artery for salt and ore trading, connects three countries, famous cities and impressive landscapes.

Description

Guarda is one of the most attractive villages in the Grisons. Its location high above the valley floor and Engadine houses with their paintings and sgraffiti give the village a unique atmosphere. Unlike other settlements in the Lower Engadine, Guarda has been spared from major fires, and its buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries have consequently been preserved. Yet the village, which has been awarded the Wakker prize, is best known because of one little boy: Ursli, the titular character and protagonist of the children’s book Schellen-Ursli (A Bell for Ursli) which has sold millions of copies. There is a trail and a museum dedicated to him in Guarda.

Neighbouring Ardez is also a World Heritage site, although it was almost completely burned down between 1621 and 1622 during the Revolt of the Leagues. Many of the houses were rebuilt and can still be admired in the heart of the village.

The bike tour continues at altitude to sun-drenched Ftan. But not the Rhaetian Railway, which dives into the Tasna Tunnel towards its terminus in Scuol. Good to know: the train has plenty of space in its bike compartment. What’s more, over 20 mineral springs bubble away in the area around the world-famous health resort of Scuol – a boon for cyclists with sore calves. Just outside Scuol, Tarasp Castle is situated on a cone-shaped rocky hill. The impressive castle is visited by tens of thousands of people every year and is considered to be a symbol of the Lower Engadine. From here, you follow a lovely, exciting route along the Inn towards your destination in Martina.

From the Lower Engadin, the bike tour can be continued across the border into the Austrian Upper Inn Valley. This is the name for the area around the Inn from the Swiss border to just before Innsbruck, after which the river begins its journey through the Lower Inn Valley to Passau, the city of three rivers, where it flows into the Danube. If you have time to spare, you can also choose to follow the entire course of the Inn from source to mouth. The Inn cycle path is also worth a visit on both the Austrian and German sides of the border.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
