Val da Siat Bike
Overview
Intro
Short tour starting in Ilanz with few climbs. Through nature reserves and meadows alongside the Rhine – the perfect tour for families.
Description
This bike tour on the sunny slopes of Surselva starts in the lively little town of Ilanz. The “first town by the Rhine” is a perfect contrast to the destination of this tour in the remote reaches of the wild and secluded Val da Siat. The route sets off along undulating gravel roads and a short, steep single track. It isn’t long before you reach the village of Rueun. Now it’s time to muster up your strength: this little-cycled mountain road climbs over 500 metres in altitude. On sunny summer days, it can get rather warm here. But the mountain panorama is a welcome distraction from all the strenuous pedalling.
Once you arrive in Siat, you’re almost certain to need to stop for a break. And not just to catch your breath from all the uphill cycling: Siat is probably one of the sunniest and prettiest villages in Surselva. A restaurant, village shop and picnic spot are all perfect places to recuperate. If you get off your bike uphill from the village and walk for two minutes along the footpath until you reach the ruins of Friberg castle, you will be rewarded with a unique panorama that is as special as the location itself. The 13th-century ruin was once the second biggest castle in Surselva.
The route continues along the shaded Alpine road until you reach the little wooden bridge at Tarschinas that crosses the wild burbling brook of “Ual da Mulin”. Now begins the descent via Siat and Schnaus, with mostly easygoing but varied terrain, until you are back in Ilanz. Narrow and wide trails alternate with some more rugged areas. Stopping to enjoy the view will help you appreciate the real character of this secluded bike tour.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
