Jeizi Enduro
Overview
Intro
Exposed, demanding passages, magnificent views of the valley, rustic hamlets and forests: the descent from Jeizinen to Gampel through the Furuwald and Pitschwald forests offers scenic diversity and technical challenges for experienced mountain bikers.
Description
The area around Jeizinen has developed from an insider tip to a hotspot for trail bikers. With the exception of the cold winter months, the trails can be ridden all year round. You can reach the start of the tour in Jeizinen in just a few minutes from Gampel by taking the cable car for the 900 metres uphill. The main downhill section to Gampel is aimed at technically experienced mountain bikers. In the uppermost part, for about one kilometre, you ride on a wide path (Jeizibärg-Weg) to Oberi Zälg. Caution and speed control are called for, as this section is also part of the main hiking route from Gampel to Jeizinen.
You then branch off from the main hiking path and head west, first through the Furuwald and later through the Pitschwald forest. Even though there are fewer people here, concentration is required. Technically demanding passages and partly exposed sections in the middle third call for a controlled, safe riding style. Time and again, you glimpse a view of the valley and the next intermediate destination, the mountain village of Bratsch. Here, a break and a visit to the observation deck with a 180° panorama of the Rhone valley are recommended.
The route from Bratsch back to Gampel to the junction with the wider main hiking path is equally popular with hikers and mountain bikers. The cooperation works well, the basic rule is: hikers have the right of way. The single trail over stone slabs and S-curves is a challenge, after which the trail becomes more playful and easier to ride. The last section once more follows a wide path (approx. 2.5m). On the Jeizibärg path, a good control of the bike is required, because the wide path tempts you to go faster. However, you should not deviate from it under any circumstances, as the rugged rocky sections here drop steeply down into the valley. Before the tour ends at the Gampel-Steg train station, it takes you past a lovely chapel above Gampel and all the way to the back of the village, where the Lonza factories used to be operated with hydroelectric power.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
