Kunkels Bike
Overview
Intro
The bike tour over the Kunkels Pass is a real classic and connects the spa town of Bad Ragaz in St. Gallen with Tamins in Grisons. At the same time, you completely circle the well-known Calanda Mountain.
Description
From Bad Ragaz the steadily ascending pass route, which was initially used by the Romans, takes you to the spa town of Valens. Then you continue on the fairly level route across the bridge, almost 100 m high, to Vasön and down to Mapragg reservoir. Before the dam turn right and continue along the lakeshore, before the route continues on the main road at the end of the lake.
Then carry on to Vättis through a rugged basin with almost vertical mountain slopes. The final ascent to the pass takes you away from the traffic through unspoilt, splendid countryside. Before the Eggwald mountain restaurant, you leave the Canton of St. Gallen and enter Grisons before reaching the pass summit.
When crossing from the Tamina Valley into the Rhine Valley, the great differences at either side of the water divide are amazing. The final descent to Tamins is a special treat, offering views of the confluence of the Vorder and Hinter Rhine. From Tamins take the national cycle route No. 2 (Rhine route) back to Bad Ragaz (or return by rail from Reichenau station).
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
