Langlaufloipe Töditritt
Overview
Intro
Enjoy the ultimate in cross-country skiing pleasure on the Töditritt, the biggest trail in Glarus. It runs through the Grosstal valley and Switzerland’s second largest municipality, always affording a view of the Tödi, the highest peak in the Glarus Alps.
Description
The Töditritt has something for everyone: with steep mountainsides on the left and right, cross-country skiers glide from Schwanden to Linthal, moving closer to the Tödi (3,614m above sea level) with every step. The highest peak in Glarus, which forms the border with the canton of Graubünden, towers imposingly at the far end of the Grosstal.
The 22-kilometre trail begins on even terrain. At Hätzingen, the route becomes a little steeper and more demanding. There are some impressive sights in the major municipality of Glarus Süd, formed in 2011 by the amalgamation of 17 villages and, until the end of 2014, Switzerland’s largest political municipality: along the way, imposing factory buildings evoke the heyday of the textile industry. Regarded as a pioneer of industrialisation, the canton enjoyed a textile boom in the 19th century. Today, the canal system built to drive these decommissioned plants seems like a piece of landscape art.
The end of the Töditritt trail is in Linthal. Covering a fifth of the canton’s territory, the southernmost village in Glarus is also worth visiting for its typical houses. Linthal marks the beginning of the Klausen Pass and was the starting point of the famous Klausen race, held from 1922 to 1934 and considered Europe’s toughest hill climb at the time. Many hiking trails and mountain tours start from the village, as does the Braunwaldbahn funicular railway, carrying guests up to the car-free Glarus sun terrace of Braunwald.
