Marbach-Escholzmatt-Loipe
Overview
Intro
Go cross-country skiing in the home patch of an Olympic medal winner: the local trail of skiing legend Sepp Haas is nestled in the UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch. Skiers enjoy extensive views of the impressive karst terrain at the foot of the Schrattenfluh.
Description
Marbach has enjoyed a decades-long reputation for its cross-country skiing. Marbach-born Sepp Haas's bronze medal win at the Grenoble Olympic Games in 1968 marked the start of a veritable boom for the sport. Haas was the first Swiss cross-country skier ever to mount the winners’ podium – his success put Marbach on the map within days.
Haas’s home trail runs past sleepy farms and ancient villages from the hamlet of Wald near Marbach along the valley floor to Escholzmatt. Skiers enjoy extensive views of the delightful countryside at the foot of the Schrattenfluh. The mountain’s wildly fissured karst terrain is the result of millennia of erosion; it is now a natural monument listed in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes.
With easy as well as more challenging sections, the Marbach-Eschholzmatt trail is suitable for all ranges of ability. With the two trails Marbach-Schärlig retour and the circular trail Marbach-Camping there are two attractive additions to the best-of trail.
It is possible to stop off at one of the 18 bus stops and catch the PostBus back to the start (free with a trail ticket or pass). There are a number of restaurants in the vicinity of the trail.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
