Mettelimoos moorland path
Overview
Intro
Entlebuch is Switzerland’s first and only biosphere reserve. The moorland path leads into the Mettelimoos, east of Finsterwald. You hike through upland moors, transitional moors and fens. This is a beautiful protected zone with views of Entlebuch.
Description
To the west of the church in Finsterwald, you turn off and head towards Mettelimoos via the hamlet of Fuchsschnellen.
Before setting out on the moor, however, it’s worth making a short detour to see the Feldmoos wind turbines at the first wind farm in the Canton of Lucerne.
Large amounts of peat were cut in Mettelimoos during the two World Wars, with 7,000 tonnes cut in 1918/19 alone. Traces of this activity are still evident today. The moor and its farmers are now protected. There are two information boards along the trail.
After hiking around the north side of the Schafberg, you reach a superb viewpoint on the saddle of the mountain (1,185 metres). Descending to Finsterwald, you can see Switzerland’s only natural gas extraction plant (operational 1985–1994) on the left as well as more peat scars.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
