Nationalpark-Panoramaweg
Overview
Intro
The remote Val Mora is paradise for hikers and bikers. Utter bliss in the middle of a peaceful, wide high valley, alps and striking rock formations on the edge of the Swiss National Park.
Description
The starting point of the route is the restaurant at the Ofen Pass, situated at an altitude of 2,149 m. A first short ascent passes a transmission tower. The mountain path then crosses a slanting scree slope below rock pinnacles. The views range from Val Müstair below to the majestic Ortler massive behind.
From Davo Plattas, a pass-like crossing, the trail runs horizontally along the north slope of Piz Daint. Be careful when you cross the trough of rugged Val Murtaröl. Descending slightly, you reach the green meadows of the wetland and cross the Aua da Murtaröl mountain stream. The path now widens into an Alpine road and continues northward to the spacious meadows of Buffalora. The far-reaching views across the valley and the mountain peaks behind it are spectacular.
The narrowing mountain trail now steadily climbs into the ravine south of Munt Chavagl. The stone pines and larches become smaller and smaller until they disappear completely at the treeline. On the steep slope you cross the border to the National Park, which was founded in 1914. Information panels are listing the strict rules of conduct for the hikers. It is not permitted to go off-trail in the park.
On the southern slope of Munt Chavagl the views of elongated Lago di Livigno open up. The reservoir lies between steep, tree-covered mountain slopes. Most of it is located on Italian soil. A mountain path soon turns right and climbs 200 altitude meters to Munt la Schera. The bare peak has been flattened by the glacier. From here you have a particularly good view of the snow-covered mountains of the Bernina group beyond the end of the Livigno valley.
Now follows the descent from Munt la Schera through Alpine meadows and wild stone pine forests. Depending on the season, the exposed slope is carpeted with flowers. The picnic area with a fountain at Alp la Schera is an ideal place to take a break. The narrow path soon leads into the untouched mountain forest. The sloping trail crosses several earlier avalanche flows and rockslides. They give you an idea of the forces of nature acting here in winter and after a heavy rainfall.
Shortly before the destination near the only hotel in the National Park the hiking trail meets the Ofen Pass road and the Ova dal Fuorn river. A building dated 1489 is a reminder of centuries of transportation with the help of pack animals and two-wheel carts. On nice summer days, the terrace of Hotel Parc Naziunal Il Fuorn is typically quite busy with day visitors.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
