Oberbach Trail
Overview
Intro
This varied circular tour follows the Jaunbach stream and offers a nice view of the impressive jagged peaks of the Gastlosen mountain range.
Description
The snowshoe tour starts at the valley station of the Gastlosen Express in the village of Jaun. The only German-speaking municipality in the Gruyère region is located at an altitude of 1050 metres, making it the highest village in the canton of Fribourg.
After crossing the bridge, the trail first follows the Jaunbach stream for a short time and then climbs up to the Oberfang alpine hut. This section offers a splendid view of the Gastlosen and Bäderhore. The route descends to the Jäunli stream, crosses it and climbs up the opposite slope to Burpel. The charming hamlet of Weibelsried is then reached across snow-covered pastures.
In a final loop, you pass scattered farms until you reach the valley station of the small ski area. On the way back, the view opens up on the right side of the Jauntal valley to the southern slope of the Combiflue with its prominent avalanche barriers. The summit of the Schopfenspitz rises up next to it. To the south, the impressive limestone walls of the Gastlosen tower above the Jauntal valley.
Back in Jaun, it is definitely worth taking a walk through the well-preserved village centre with its characteristic wooden houses dating back as far as the 17th to 19th centuries. The villagescape is reminiscent of the farming villages of the Simmental valley, from where the upper Jaun valley was first populated in the 12th century. At that time, the narrow Jaunbach gorge made it difficult to reach the Fribourg region, which isolated the village and resulted in Jaun remaining German-speaking to this day.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
