Obererbs Trail
Overview
Intro
The snowshoe hike to Obererbs is a perfect way to get back to nature, far from the bustle of everyday life. Pass through woodlands and meadows, always surrounded by mighty Glarus peaks like the Hausstock, Vorab and Tschingelhörner.
Description
The signposted tour begins by the Walenbrugg military canteen. At first, the well-maintained track runs uphill on an even gradient through the Erbserwald forest. Attentive hikers will see fox, hare and chamois tracks alongside their own – and with a bit of luck, the animals themselves.
As the unwooded section of the tour begins, hikers can now admire the Elm mountain scenery: the north face of the Hausstock (3,158m above sea level), the rugged slopes below the Vorab and the Zwölfihorn form an impressive panorama. Depending on snowfall, the Alpine huts of the Oberstafel on Erbsalp may already be visible on the plain. The end of the tour at the Obererbs ski hut draws closer, the Fahnenstock, Piz Sardona and Piz Segnes emerge and the farms in the south of Elm can be seen on the valley floor. Another magnificent view greets hikers on arrival at the hut: the north-east face of the Hausstock and the Sardona World Heritage region, dominated by the jagged spikes of the Tschingelhörner and Elm’s famous rock window, known as Martin’s Hole.
On the way back, the trail runs across open meadows and past Alpine huts vacated for the winter. Part of the Elm Schabell winter sports resort can be seen in the distance. The path now descends through the Erbserwald and soon rejoins the ascent route, which leads downhill on the same track to the starting point in Walenbrugg.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
