Intro
The long climb up the «Panoramastrasse» to Glaubenbielenpass, at over 1600 m above sea level, is rewarded by fantastic views across the Sarnersee lake. The stage ends in the tourist resort of Sörenberg at the foot of the Brienzer Rothorn.
Description
The seventh stage of the Panorama Bike route begins in the capital of the canton of Obwalden. Nestled among meadows, forests and floodplains, Sarnen lies on the lake of the same name, surrounded by magnificent mountain scenery. You leave the town along the Sarner Aa river, then Lake Sarnen and soon reach Oberwilen. It’s worth stopping now and again to take in the stunning views right on the lake.
You then go through a stretch of woodland and across a bridge that spans the Steinibach stream. You will see that it gets its name (literally “stony stream”) from the stony streambed. From here a protected floodplain area stretches to the mouth of the stream.
A few minutes later, you cross the next bridge, this time over the Laui. Then begins the real climb: Around 1000 metres in altitude up to the Glaubenbielen Pass. You mainly travel on the road here, which can be a little narrow at times due to traffic. But you’re constantly rewarded with a fantastic view over Lake Sarnen.
After reaching the Glaubenbielen Pass, take a moment to enjoy the view over the Sarnen Valley or the sea of fog. You then make a fast-paced descent to Sörenberg; the first 400 or so metres in altitude are on the main road, and the last 100 metres on a gravel trail. Sörenberg is in the Lucerne hinterland and is surrounded by a wonderful moorland landscape with unique flora and fauna.
