Schattsite Trail

The trail starts at Adelboden Boden in the Bir Müli neighbourhood by the river Engstlige. This is also the location of the Boden ski trail, which you walk past at the beginning. The route rises past the last of the houses for a kilometre or so up the foot of the slope, before becoming quite steep for a short stretch. Turn once you reach the level of the snow-covered road at Hohliebe.

The trail follows the road for around half a kilometre before turning off again. As the trail is shaped like a figure of eight, there are two possible routes. So if you have had enough by this point, you can follow the road for a few metres more, where you will find the route back down. It would be a shame though: the Alpine road leads uphill to the Wenig area, where the houses grow fewer and further between, for a yet more authentic snowshoe hiking experience. The snow-covered landscape is gloriously untouched, with the route passing between two wooded areas. Once you are out of the woods, you will be at the highest point of the trail and the descent begins.

Along the way, there are a few cabins here and there where you can take a break and admire the magnificent panorama over Adelboden. For a longer break, the Restaurant Hohliebestübli, which you will pass by on the way down, is also an excellent option. It is housed in a time-honoured farmhouse that dates back over 300 years and is popular among connoisseurs (make sure to check the opening times). The trail ends back at Müli bridge not far from the Boden/Kreuzgasse stop, where a bus will be able to take you back to the village.
