Overview
Intro
A fun experience which is fortunately not over too quickly: the sledge run from Melchsee-Frutt to Stöckalp is eight kilometres in length – the longest in Central Switzerland. On the old mule tracks from back then this run gehts over an altitude difference of almost 1000 metres.
Description
The Melchtal valley stretches southwards from Kerns, situated between Lake Sarnen and Lake Lucerne, to Stöckalp. The pilgrimage site of Melchtal is home to the Benedictine monastery St. Nicholas of Flüe, dedicated to the local saint Brother Klaus. The central area of tourist activity is the extensive upland plateau of Melchsee-Frutt. From Melchtal you can get to this car-free sun terrace at an altitude of nearly 2000 metres in just a few minutes.
You can see the sledge run from the cable car, and it starts directly at the mountain station. The cable car, which crosses the piste several times and is shared with skiers, has a longstanding tradition: in the 19th century wealthy spa guests were said to have been carried up to Melchsee on sedan chairs. They would visit the health resort to take healing whey baths. The old mule tracks from back then are now packed with action and adrenaline: the sledge run from Frutt to Stöckalp is eight kilometres in length – making it the longest in Central Switzerland. With a downhill altitude difference of 1000 metres, it is possible to get up a good speed. Some of the run passes through idyllic forest scenery at a leisurely pace. When the view clears you have a superb view of Melchtal valley right up to Mount Pilatus overlooking Lucerne.
Dopo un passaggio piuttosto lungo attraverso il Grosswald si raggiunge la stazione intermedia di Cheselen. Qui si può fare una pausa prima di tornare alla partenza presso la stazione a valle di Stöckalp.
