Intro
Baldeggersee represents an idyllic nature reserve with 300 plant species. Lake Hallwil, the smallest Swiss lake with public boat service and place to bathe. The route follows the Aabach to Lenzburg, with castle of the same name, which is considered one of Switzerland's most beautiful.
Description
From Lucerne, a major Swiss tourist attraction with the popular Chapel Bridge, the route first leads along the Reuss River. On sunny days, hundreds are out here on their bikes, while thousands of insects are dancing above the river. Reusszopf is a fun place to watch Kleine Emme and Reuss merging, sometimes creating an amazing variety of colours. A peculiar mix of interests is at play in this area, consisting of nature conservation, flood protection, fishing, neighbourhood associations and the construction industry. Shortly after the military airfield the route turns off and a brief, but steep ascent follows.
But then the scenery changes drastically: the route to the Seetal Valley is dotted with apple orchards, corn fields, and grazing cows. Lake Baldegg is a picturesque and peaceful place. Even the gulls enjoy the fields here in this haven for nature conservation with around 300 different species of plants. Situated above the lake is stately Heidegg Castle. It is surrounded by a large park, which even includes a vineyard. The Aabach later accompanies the bike riders to Lake Hallwil. All sorts of delicacies are available on the way, directly from the farmers: berries, plums and quince, syrup and cider. Lake Hallwil is a great place to swim or take a boat ride. The culmination in the form of the Hallwyl water castle follows at the end of the lake. The structures from the 11th century are located on two islands, surrounded by the gentle Aabach River. A museum provides information about how people lived here in the 17th and 18th century. It also offers insight into country life in the Aargau during the early times.
A leisurely ride follows the Aabach in the direction of Lenzburg. The last part leads through the forest, past the main prison and a correctional facility. The lovely old town with its Late Gothic and Baroque architecture should not be missed. Neither should the omnipresent, massive Lenzburg Castle, which, interestingly, was built on top of a nearly circular hill. Once the seat of the Landvögte of Bern, it is one of Switzerland’s oldest and most important hilltop castles.
