Intro
Easy and quiet winter hike between Susch and Lavin, two villages in the Lower Engadin. The path climbs gently through the forest to a clearing. At the end, it crosses open terrain and ultimately the Inn River on the way to the destination.
Description
The winter hike begins in the Engadin village of Susch. Immovable, like a barrier, Susch crouches at the foot of the Flüela Pass. The building façades are an indication of the rich cultural life you can expect when you enter. The appearance of the village, which blossomed in the age of mule tracks and stage coaches, is enhanced by the prominent towers in the village centre and the Rohan fortress.
From the Susch train station the path leads down to the village centre and across the bridge it enters the beautiful section of Sur Punt. As you leave the village on its eastern end, the trail begins an easy climb and shortly thereafter it moves into the forest. The highest point of the tour is reached at the forest clearing of Prasüras. For a while, the wide winter hiking trail descends through the snow-covered forest, until it changes to open terrain shortly before reaching Lavin. Near Lavin the path crosses the Inn River again and takes you through the centre of the village to the train station.
While Lavin has a population of just 200, it enjoys a rich cultural life and its innovative residents are known to be very charismatic. When the village was rebuilt after the great fire of 1869 it wound up with Italian characteristics, as demonstrated by its zest for life and its cosmopolitan outlook – because this is Lavin: Italianità Engiadinaisa.
