Tour des Alpes Vaudoises
Overview
Intro
In Trechadèze, troops from Ormont joined Bern in the 1798 battle against the Vaud Republic. A geological highlight follows on the Col de la Croix: the plaster pyramids are a natural masterpiece created by thousands of years of weathering of old limestone.
Description
Les Diablerets is located between Lake Geneva and Gstaad at 1,200 metres above sea level. The route sets off from the railway station, which is also the last stop on the train from Aigle. After crossing the river Saane, a beautiful path leads along the river Grande Eau. Once the route branches off, you will be more or less awe-struck by the immense rock face and its waterfall. Back in the Middle Ages, this face was considered a dangerous and cursed place where the devil went about his nefarious business. The place name is derived from the French “le diable”, meaning the devil. The waterfall is fed by glaciers further uphill.
A beautiful path leads uphill to the Col de la Croix. At this point, you will catch an impressive glimpse of the pointy pyramids. The elements eroded and shaped these over the years. The next pass is the hike’s highest: at 1,936 metres above sea level, the Col de l’Encrène offers magnificent views over the Diablerets massif. Then comes the descent to the Lac des Chavonnes. The natural lake is nestled in the heart of a magnificent wilderness. The lakeside restaurant is the perfect place to take a break before tackling the final climb.
The third pass of this leg is the Col du Bretaye, which is also reachable by the cog railway departing from Bex. Now follows the descent covering over 600 metres in altitude. Past the restaurant Les Boquetins, you will arrive at a beautiful path. At times passing through forested sections, at other times following the cog railway, and further on passing through the chalet neighbourhoods, this leg comes to an end in Villars-sur-Ollon. Along the way, you will enjoy magnificent views of the Dents du Midi and Mont Blanc mountains.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
