Tour of Lake Lucerne
Overview
Intro
Combining this escapade with a boat trip makes for a short yet spectacular loop on the shores of Lake Lucerne.
Description
Soon after leaving Lucerne’s imposing station, you leave the main roads behind to pedal around the water’s edge as far as Hergiswil. You then cross the bridge separating Lake Alpnach from Lake Lucerne and head for Stans, capital of Canton Nidwalden. After a few kilometres of cycling in the countryside, you return to the lake and a cycle path for the leg to Beckenried.
At this point, you take the boat to Gersau. The crossing lasts a quarter of an hour or so – time enough to admire the mountains rising from the lake.
At Gersau, you follow the main road for a few kilometres before leaving it at Weggis. The café terraces bordering this lakeside village might prove tempting, after which you gain some height for the final leg of the loop which undulates in the countryside overlooking Lake Lucerne.
The approach to Lucerne and its station takes you past the famous Swiss Museum of Transport.
