Valanvron Tour
Overview
Intro
From the city to the idyllic countryside in just a few minutes: the short bike tour to Le Valanvron takes you from the gates of La Chaux-de-Fonds to the typical Jura landscapes with dry stone walls, farms, cows and horses. Worthwhile detours: a vantage point with a view of the Doubs, and a visit to the watchmaking town.
Description
Valanvron is the name of a district located to the north-east of the watchmaking town of La Chaux-de-Fonds in the Neuchâtel Jura region. The route starts at the Gare de l'Est, a small train station of the Jura railways. It crosses the town with a slight climb to the Bel-Air neighbourhood. Since the route is mostly even and easy, it can be ridden in both directions without any problems from here on.
The tour offers beautiful sceneries typical of the Neuchâtel Jura: dry stone walls, wide fields, old Neuchâtel farmhouses, herds of cows and horses. All this is particularly enjoyable on the quiet roads with little traffic. About halfway along the route, it is worth making a detour to the viewpoint at La Roche Guillaume, about 800 metres from the route. It offers a magnificent panorama of the meandering Doubs river and France to the north.
As the tour is short, there is enough time to visit the watchmaking town of La Chaux-de-Fonds (1000 m a.s.l.) afterwards. The cityscape looks like a huge chessboard. Due to the linear arrangement of the wide roads the watchmakers had a great deal of light, their most important tool. Because of its exceptional construction style the city together with adjacent Le Locle was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
