Intro
You'll be enchanted by charming Val Bever and the sculptures on the Märchenweg (Fairy Tale Trail) long before you set eyes on the Berninamassiv. Along the river landscape of the Inn on the Engadin high plateau to the world-famous health resort «Top of the World».
Description
Spinas consists of a railway station, a restaurant and a few Alpine huts. It is located in the secluded Bever Valley. The first train station in the Engadine region at 1815 m has been connected with Preda since 1903 through the Albula tunnel. The Fairy-tale Trail runs from Spinas to Bever. Gigantic sculptures at six stations illustrate fairy-tales, which were written by authors from the Engadine. The stories can also be found in large-sized books.
At first, the path crosses the Beverin river and then continues through light larch forests and sweet-scented meadows. Between the steep slopes of Crasta Mora and Cho d’Valletta the route follows the river through the valley to the village of Bever.
Soon you are on the Engadine plateau on the Inn River. The Beverin also flows into the Inn. The path now goes upstream, some of it directly along the water and soon Europe’s highest airport comes into view. Occasionally you can see a private jet approach. No doubt the destination is St. Moritz, because this is the way that stars, government members and royals prefer to travel to the exclusive resort.
The Inn River leads through Samedan past horse pastures and typical Engadine-style homes. The village is the political centre of the Upper Engadine and the hub of the Rhaetian Railway. The museum in the Planta House offers insight into the lifestyle of nobility. Chesa Planta is also a competence centre for the Romansh language and culture.
Views of the Bernina massif accompany you through the renatured river landscape across numerous wooden walkways and bridges in the direction of Celerina. The Inn River is an ideal habitat for grayling here. Every year, in the first weeks of May, the males are battling over the females while they search the area for the best gravel surfaces for the spawning season.
Along the tracks of the Rhaetian Railway you reach Celerina and continue through the village. No other place in the Engadine boasts as many hours of sunshine as Celerina does. The last few meters lead to the train station of St. Moritz and the destination of the route.
