Via Engiadina
Overview
Intro
Going along the Julier Pass road, and across fragrant pastures to Alp Suvretta, St. Moritz soon comes into view. The next destination is Corviglia, the local mountain of the glamorous alpine metropolis. The final ascent ends at the deep blue natural reservoir of Lej Alv. From Marguns, you can take the gondola lift to Celerina or follow the alpine trail.
Description
At the foot of the Julier Pass at an altitude of 1,815 m is the village of Silvaplana. In economic terms, tourism is now the mainstay of the municipality.
The Corvatsch railway opened in 1964. Holiday homes then sprang up like mushrooms, and the population also doubled within a few years. This major increase meant that the Romansh-speaking community became a minority. The federal government and the canton therefore made great efforts to preserve the Romansh language.
You go slightly uphill until just after Bunarivo. The mountain path around Albanatscha can be reached in about an hour. It is an enjoyable hike from this point onwards, with fragrant meadows, blueberry bushes, stone pine and larch trees, and a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains and lakes. It would be difficult to find a more varied hike. You arrive at Alp Suvretta in just under two and a half hours.
There is a bend in the trail here and you continue along a gravel road to Randolins and Alp Giop. If the altitude difference was barely noticeable in the previous two hours, it now becomes a little steeper from here. Corviglia is the terminal station of the cog railway and an important departure point for winter sports enthusiasts, hikers and bikers. A restaurant tempts you to take a break here. Further up the mountain is the Lej Alv, a deep blue natural reservoir which is also the highest point of the hike at an altitude of over 2,500 m.
The final half hour of the trail takes you on a gravel road. The superb 5-hour hike ends in Marguns. You can take the gondola lift to Celerina from here.
