Intro
The trail from Burgdorf to Bern is marked by many forested sections. Between Thorberg and Utzigen it leads along the old monastery path. Boll forest has a whole path network with clear traces of sunken paths.
Description
Burgdorf was a model town for walking and cycling from 1996 to 2006 and has since enjoyed the reputation of being Switzerland's most bicycle-friendly town. The impressive 800-year-old castle complex dominates the medieval town at the gateway to the Emmental.
From the station, walk along the city park towards the castle and the old town. Then you cross residential neighbourhoods and find yourself in a meadow shortly after. You can finally see the castle, which wasn't visible on its rocky spur even as you stood directly in front. The views over the surrounding fields to the Jura chain are also stunning.
Leaving the Pleerwald forest behind, you reach a hilly landscape and walk past a few small hamlets to Krauchtal. There you can see several massive building complexes on a rock – the Thorberg correctional facility. The prison, which belongs to the penitentiary system of eleven cantons in north-western and central Switzerland, is responsible for enforcing the sentences imposed on over 170 men.
From this point, the trail climbs 250 metres in altitude and crosses another forest section. Out of the forest again, you pass the Tannenboden animal shelter and several pristine pastures. The views of the surrounding Alpine peaks are magnificent. The villages of Utzigen and Boll follow next, and via Dentenberg and Amsleberg you reach Ostermundigen. Before crossing the motorway, you can see the Paul Klee Centre on the left. The striking buildings and their surroundings were designed by the architect Renzo Piano, forming a unique symbiosis of nature and culture. The centre houses around 4,000 paintings, watercolours and drawings from all of Paul Klee's creative periods.
Soon after, you reach the end of the stage at the Bear Park in Bern. From here, you enjoy fantastic views over the bridge to the old town and down to the steel-blue Aare loop.
