ViaJacobi
Overview
Intro
Various key points of national importance to Switzerland are found along the ViaJacobi between Huttwil and Burgdorf. The Leuenhohle sunken path has been cut several metres deep into the sandstone. The former chapel and hospice is a unique ensemble.
Description
Huttwil is a historic country town in the lower Emmental. It is known for its National Sports and Cultural Centre, the classicist town centre, and as a gateway to the Napfbergland. The hike, which takes more than six hours, starts at the railway station in a westerly direction. It first leads through the residential neighbourhoods of Huttwil. Soon you leave the town, pass the sawmill and find yourself climbing the Fiechtenberg.
The hike takes you from hill to hill to Dürrenroth, alternating between pastures and forest sections. Large, stately farms alternate with modest industrial cottages. The church dating from 1486 and the late Baroque Bären and Kreuz inns from the early 19th century embellish the unspoilt, historic village centre.
After the Rotwald forest comes the hamlet of Häusermoos. Further along the way via Weiden, it's well worth taking a short detour to the vantage point at Lueg. At the so-called Heiligenlandpöli, magnificent views of the Bernese Alps and the Emmental beckon. In medieval times, there was a watchtower here where an alarm fire could be lit in the event of war.
At the Lueg country inn, the stadium catches the eye. It serves as a venue for various Swiss folk culture events, such as concerts, comedy shows and musicals.
After Kaltacker, you're on the last section through the Leuenhohle, one of Switzerland's most beautiful sunken lanes. Part of the way had to be hewn into the sandstone to compensate for the steep gradients.
After crossing the Emme, spectacular views of the majestic red-brick Burgdorf Castle open up. When Berchtold V, the last Duke of Zähringen, built Burgdorf around 1200, the castle took on its current form. The scenic hike ends at Burgdorf railway station through the lower old town, past the town park.
