Intro
This route at the far end of the Safien Valley leads through a pine forest and past the Wanna compensating reservoir, Walser houses and Alpine huts to «z’Hinderst». Hikers are surrounded by restful silence and, if they’re quiet enough, they can watch deer, chamois or even ibexes along the way.
Description
Visitors to the far end of the wintry, remote Safien Valley soon find themselves immersed in restful silence. The wide valley floor is surrounded by imposing mountains like the Wisshorn, Schwarzhorn and Gelbhorn. At times, it feels like being in an amphitheatre. The winter hiking trail starts in Thalkirch Turrahus and then follows the riverbed of the Rabiusa. Soon, it passes through a small pine forest that also provides protection for deer and black grouse.
A rather strange feature in this otherwise idyllic landscape is the distinctive compensating reservoir of the Zervreila power stations. The path follows the basin, then slopes gently and constantly uphill. It passes by typical old Walser houses and Alpine huts before reaching «z’Hinderst», the turning point and also the highest point of the hike. Here, hikers have an impressive view of a jagged, frosted cliff used for ice climbing.
All the way back, they enjoy a beautiful view of the scattered Walser settlements typical of the Safien Valley. They can see as far as the Camana huts, which constrast starkly with the landscape like a string of pearls in the snow. In the Turra exhibition stable at the start and end point, visitors can learn fascinating facts about the settlement of the Safien Valley and its typical wooden buildings and stables. They can even get involved and try their hand at laying a shingle roof. In the nearby Turrahus mountain inn or the Gasslihof farm pub, they can satisfy their hunger and thirst with fine regional delicacies.
