Rovio
Overview
Intro
Rovio is a pretty, centuries-old Ticino village and is located not far from Lugano. Lush nature and magnificent views of Lake Lugano make this place unforgettable.
Rovio is a small, idyllic village steeped in history and home to almost 750 inhabitants, with narrow, winding alleyways, cobbled streets and old drinking troughs. Here, you will still find historic facades, palaces and frescoes from the 18th and 19th centuries. Rovio village is full of character, a fact reflected in its surroundings, the Val Mara, where you will find the Cascata del Botto waterfall and nearby churches S. Vigilio and Santi Vitale e Agata.
The Cascata del Botto waterfall is just 15 minutes from the village centre – simply follow the yellow hiking path signposts. A forest path leads between tall chestnut trees and winds its way past huge boulders, covered in moss and lichen. As soon as you reach a clearing, the path becomes narrower and more exposed, so good sturdy walking shoes are essential. The sound of thundering water fills the air, getting increasingly louder the closer you get to the Botto waterfall. The waterfall springs from the Sovaglia stream and drops around 68 metres. The stream then continues to meander down the valley, over flat stones and rocks to Lake Lugano.
Rovio nestles picturesquely on the slope of Monte Generoso in the Val Mara, surrounded by gentle, hilly vineyards and the deep blue sparkling Lake Lugano in the background. Here, there are magnificent panoramic views everywhere you turn, regardless of whether you are hiking or sitting comfortably on a bench.
In addition, Rovio is the perfect starting point for numerous activities. The 1,701-metre Monte Generoso, which offers stunning panoramic views, can be ascended from Capolago by 125-year-old cog railway oron foot from Rovio. At the summit, the “Fiore di pietra” (stone flower) awaits. Created by renowned architect Mario Botta, it is ready to welcome visitors with its magnificent terrace, two light-flooded restaurants and conference room.
