Schatzalp
Overview
Intro
A place for anyone who seeks peace and quiet, appreciates nature and wants to experience history. The historic hotel and Alpine landscape are what makes this spot 300 metres above Davos so special.
The Schatzalp funicular railway has been running to the tranquil, south-facing sun terrace 1,861 metres above sea level since 1899. The Art Nouveau Hotel Schatzalp was originally designed as a luxury sanatorium, and at the beginning of the 20th century was considered to be the most advanced in the region. It was here that Thomas Mann found inspiration and ideas for his novel “The Magic Mountain”. Since 1953 the former sanatorium has been a first-class hotel.
Over 3,500 plant species and varieties from all over the world bloom in the Alpinum Schatzalp botanical garden from June to September: there are specimens from the Pyrenees, New Zealand, China, Nepal, Tibet and Switzerland.
From hiking, walking, summer tobogganing and visiting the botanic garden to enjoying the views from the mountain restaurant or spending the night in the impressive historic hotel, there are a host of attractions to enjoy on the Schatzalp.
