Intro

The Schöllenen Gorge stretches from Göschenen to Andermatt in the Gotthard region. It was here over 200 years ago that the French fought the Russians. The Suvorov Monument is a memorial to the fallen.

There was no way to reach this beautifully wild gorge when travellers crossed the Gotthard Pass. The villagers in the Urseren Valley built the steps, wooden walkways and paths themselves. But legend has it that they needed help to build a bridge. The devil offered to help, but the villagers were able to outwit him.

In 1799 a battle pitting Napoleon’s troops against the Russians who were under the command of General Suvorov took place in Schöllenen Gorge. The Suvorov monument carved out of rock was erected in 1899 as a memorial to the Russian soldiers who fell in the battle. Russian President Dmitri Medvedev visited the monument during his state visit in 2009.

If you want a hair-raising glimpse into the depths of the Schöllenen Gorge, you should hit the Schöllenen circular hiking trail during the summer months. It is an easy walk and takes no more than 30 minutes at a leisurely pace. The towering cliff faces and the roaring torrent of the Reuss make a fascinating sight. The Teufelsbrücke restaurant is situated directly next to the bridge of the same name. In the summer months, guests can feel the magic of the legendary Gotthard as they eat and drink.

Getting there: By car or train to Göschenen or Andermatt.
