Intro

Wild, raw, authentic. That’s the Bernese Jura. These characteristics are particularly in evidence on the Chemin de Montoz. On this hilly plateau, surrounded by a forest belt, you find yourself walking through mystical landscapes. Mountain inns – so-called métairies – invite you to stay and dine. Hospitality is a top priority.

It is quite unlike anywhere else on earth. Because in the Bernese Jura is, as only the Bernese Jura can be. And only those who walk in nature can experience the magic of the region with all its power. Clouds of fog creep up from the valley onto the Montoz range. However, only briefly. When they retreat again, the sun breaks through and bathes the landscape in even more magical beauty. Moss sparkles in the sun. The knotted groups of gnarled trees come into their own. Beech and spruce rub shoulders. In between are open pastures.

It’s a nice bit of walking to get here. The hike, known as the Chemin de Montoz, starts in Untergrenchenberg and leads over the Montoz chain to Tavannes. Hiking in this remote location makes a lasting impression. Thoughts run free, the air is clear. Take a deep breath and consciously absorb this special world far away from the stressful everyday life in the city. Three hikers reach the ridge before noon.

Numerous cows graze in the spacious, natural pastures. The farms rely on suckler cow husbandry. This form is characterised by the natural husbandry of the animals: The calf remains with its mother after birth. It mainly gets the mother’s milk, later grass and hay. Free range with winter outdoor runs and summer pasture grazing are required. There are probably few more suitable habitats than the meadows and pastures of the Bernese Jura. Here this fair breeding is practiced with a lot of heart and soul.

It remains their secret whether the cows feel so comfortable in this environment because they are always offered magnificent panoramas of the Three-Lakes district. However, among hikers, the route is certainly popular for this reason.

A moment of peace: Picnic under the tree.

With all the highlights, breaks must not be forgotten. At midday, a picnic under a tree is a welcome idea. Spread out the blanket, kick off your hiking boots and enjoy. With a piece of bread and a little local Tête de Moine, let your gaze wander over the hills and lakes and simply absorb the moment.

On the rest of the route, nature remains the star. The hiking trails are well marked and a pleasure even for inexperienced hikers. You are guaranteed to burn a few calories as you work up a sweat. This means you can take a seat with a clear conscience to enjoy the crowning glory of the day in one of the so-called métairies. This is the name given to farms scattered throughout the Jura region that welcome guests.

Hospitality and regional cuisine.

These mountain inns that serve simple but tasty meals.are typical of the Jura mountain chain. Just the thing after a hike or bike tour. Dishes such as rösti, fondue or a meat and cheese platter are served by the farmers at large tables. This is the perfect way to replenish your energy reserves and to strike up conversation with locals. All ingredients come from the region. The innkeepers, called “métayers”, follow the rhythms of nature and some even make their own cheese.

And that brings us full circle. A hike that began in impressive natural surroundings, with the chance to encounter the animals and plants that shape nature, ends with people who are attuned to nature’s rhythms.
