Intro

Parks of national importance help to preserve and enhance natural habitats and particularly beautiful countryside. They also encourage a region’s sustainable economic development, especially in the field of tourism, and give people the opportunity to engage with nature.

The legal basis for the creation of parks of national importance has been in effect in Switzerland since 1 December 2007. The Confederation is promoting the creation and operation of parks by means of financial assistance and the award of a park label. It only recognises parks that are established at regional initiatives and have the support of the local population. The cantons are called on to provide their support and assistance with regional initiatives. There are 17 parks in operation today, with one park currently in the setting-up phase.
