Above Jaun, the limestone peaks of the Gastlosen reach almost vertically up to the sky. The view of the mountain chain, known as the Dolomites of Switzerland, is truly spectacular. The rock faces are a climber’s paradise. Those who prefer something a little more leisurely will be spoiled for choice with the hiking trails on offer.
Jaun, the only German-speaking community in the La Gruyère Region, is encircled by the majestic peaks of the Gastlosen mountain chain and offers pristine nature and a wide variety of leisure activities. The Gastlosen Express chair lift brings hikers and other connoisseurs up to the Bärghus Musersbergli, closer to the limestone rock faces.
The Bärghus Musersbergli is the ideal starting point for hikes in the region. The Gastlosen circular hike is a real classic. Lasting around five hours, the hike offers diversity in terms of geology and flora that hikers seldom find in the Pre-Alps. The tour follows an undulating route around the Gastlosen mountain range. The view of the Bernese Alps against a backdrop of the 4,000-metre peaks of the Valais is truly breathtaking.
The Gastlosen are known as a diverse climbing paradise and one of the most beautiful climbing areas in Europe. Here, climbers will find more than 800 routes in 1,450 pitches for all levels. All climbers will find the right route for them here, no matter whether they are professionals or beginners.
Those seeking a more leisurely experience can follow the panorama route to the vantage point, where views of the mountain chain await them. The geological education path at the foot of the Gastlosen range is the ideal entertainment for families and those interested in geology. Along the way, hikers will come across a special feature: the hole in the Gastlosen, known as the “Grossmutterloch”. Legend has it that the devil was once so angry with his grandmother that he hurled her against the rock. Or is it more likely to be the result of a natural process of rock erosion? Either way, the hole in the rock is an impressive sight to behold. In winter between November and February, the sun even shines through the hole in the rock for a few minutes.
Around the Gastlosen, the mountain inns of Chalet Grat, Musersbergli and the legendary Soldatenhaus invite you to take a break and have a bite to eat. In Chalet Gras and the Soldatenhaus, you can even spend the night there. The historic Soldatenhaus was built by the Swiss Army and the Fusilier Batallion of the 7th Regiment, which united Fribourg troops. Due to its many visitors and the forces of nature, the building has seen better days – but it is still the pride of the people of Fribourg and part of their heritage.
The best way to end a day in the Gastlosen region is by travelling back down into the valley by kick scooter. At the upper station for the Gastlosen Express, you can hire a Gastlosen kick scooter for the six-kilometre journey down to the valley station.
