Watch and feed tame marmots on the playground at Saas-Fee in Valais. On the Marmot Trail at 2448 meters you can experience the trusting animals up close – a highlight for families.
The marmots in Saas-Fee at a glance
At Spielboden at 2448 meters in the Valais village of Saas-Fee lives a large colony of tame marmots. They are active from May to mid-October and can be fed by hand. They spend the winter in hibernation – for up to 8 months.
What to experience
Marmot watching and feeding (2-4 hours)
With the Spielbodenbahn you can travel from Saas-Fee to 2448 meters in about 10 minutes. There you will find the marmot colony around the mountain station and along the marmot trail. Sit down, have food ready – and the animals will come and eat out of your hand.
- Good to know: Marmot food is available at the Saas-Fee tourist office or in the Spielboden restaurant.
- Tip: Only use the official marmot food – this is how you protect the health of the animals.
On the marmot trail (45 minutes)
The circular trail starts at the Spielboden mountain station and takes you into the area of the marmots. At several information boards you will learn interesting facts about the life of the rodents. The path is short and easy to walk, but not suitable for prams.
- Good to know: Sturdy shoes are recommended.
- Tip: With the SaastalCard, the cable car is free of charge from the first night.
