A meeting of minds among the freestyle elite in the Engadin.
Intro
In 2025, the entire freestyle world will be looking to St. Moritz, where the Engadin will be playing host to the Freestyle World Championships. Local crack sporting talent will also compete. Snowboarder Nicolas Huber and freestyle skiers Nicola and Gian Andri Bolinger show why there are few places that compare with Corvatsch and Corviglia when it comes to world-class conditions. At the same time, both areas are ideal destinations for all those who love the freestyle way of life. What’s more: Huber slips into the role of the Joker. He has been making a big impression on the slopes dressed as Batman’s arch-enemy from the movies.
Engadin St. Moritz
The Engadin is considered the cradle of winter sports, offering sun, snow and slopes without end – not to mention an incomparable light. The Corvatsch boasts a freestyle park that ranks among the best in the world. And with the Corviglia above St. Moritz, the venue of the 2025 Freestyle World Championships will have a legendary ski area.
Action, action, action.
Action, action, action. This is precisely what you can expect from 17 to 30 March 2025 on Silvaplana’s local mountain, the Corvatsch, and on the local mountain of St. Moritz, the Corviglia, as well as in the town of St. Moritz itself. The world’s best ski freestyle skiers and snowboarders will compete here in the disciplines of slopestyle, halfpipe, big air, cross, parallel giant slalom, parallel slalom, aerials and moguls. This event will see 1,200 athletes from 40 nations come together before an audience of 70,000 spectators, to transform the Engadin into a real freestyle paradise.
Snowboarder Nicolas Huber and brothers Nicola and Gian Andri Bolinger – both freestyle skiers – will compete for first place. The fact that they are now among the world’s best is also due in large measure to the Engadin. These are the mountains, the infrastructure and the people that have made them who they are today:
“The Engadin has been a major influence on me ever since I was a child. I learned to snowboard on the Corvatsch slopes. It has been all I think about ever since. There’s nothing better than being on the move in the great outdoors.”
“The Engadin boasts great infrastructure for sports of all kinds. A freestyle community has emerged in the Engadin that invests a lot of love and passion into the sport. FRESK, the freestyle team, has really shaped me and helped to make me who I am today.”
The Corvatsch. Park & pipe.
The 15 disciplines will be taking place across three venues: The first of these is the Corvatsch. The upper station is located 3,303 metres above sea level, and the Corvatsch is top-notch in other aspects, too. This is where the slopestyle and halfpipe competitions will be held. Corvatsch Park has always been a magical place for freestyle skiers and snowboarders. Its Pro Line sets new standards. But there’s also plenty on offer for beginners to enjoy. Every aspect of the freestyle way of life is celebrated here. It is Nicolas Huber’s favourite park. The new half pipe rounds off the first-class freestyle facilities on offer. The park took two and a half years to create. Today, it meets the highest standards.
“I learned the basics on the Corvatsch and still regularly train there today. The Corvatsch has become a home base for me. Corvatsch Park is my absolute favourite,” says Nicolas Huber, adding: “The Corvatsch is like my home away from home. I know every stone and most of the people who work on the mountain. I feel completely at home here. The challenging terrain has made me the snowboarder I am today. I have grown up together with the snow park. If it weren’t for the Corvatsch, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
The Corviglia. Ski & snowboard cross, parallel slalom, giant slalom, aerials, moguls.
The second competition venue is the Corviglia. The word “legendary” is absolutely appropriate when referring to the Corviglia. This top area is among the most popular and has a longstanding history. The Freestyle World Championships will be another chapter in its rich history. Ski & snowboard cross, parallel slalom and giant slalom as well as aerial and mogul events will all take place here. The mountain is also legendary for its breath-taking views of the Engadin lakes. The athletes will have little time to enjoy the view, however.
The Corviglia has a lot of sun and some incredibly beautiful slopes.
It all started for me on the Corviglia slopes – with my brother and FRESK (the freestyle ski school).
St. Moritz. Big air.
Finally, the third venue will be the town of St. Moritz itself. Few winter sports resorts are as well-known as St. Moritz. And this is where the big air event will be held. The town is known for its particularly special hotels. Such as the Hotel Kulm, for example. So, the stage is set and the Freestyle World Championships is sure to be an event to remember!
