Augusta Raurica in the canton Basel-Land is the largest archaeological park in Switzerland. Walk through a theatre that once held 10,000 people, enter a fully furnished Roman house and visit the Roman Festival.
The Augusta Raurica – Roman Site at a glance
The largest archaeological park in Switzerland is located in Augst in the canton Basel-Land and includes over 30 monuments of a Roman colony city. These include the theatre, a well shaft and the longest walk-in sewer from Roman times. In the museum, changing exhibitions show the everyday life of the Romans.
What to experience
Outdoor area and Roman theatre (1.5–2 hours)
The Theatre of Augusta Raurica is considered the most imposing Roman theatre north of the Alps, with seats for up to 10,000 onlookers. From the steep seating steps, your gaze wanders over the entire grounds. The tour continues to the temples, forum, thermal baths and the unusual sewer.

Roman House and Museum (1 hour)
In the reconstructed Roman house, you can experience first-hand how a Roman family lived – from the atrium to the kitchen. The museum shows the world-famous silver treasure of Kaiseraugst and exhibitions on Roman food and drink culture. Right next door in the wildlife park, with Zackl sheep, Nera Verzasca goat and other farm animals, almost unknown old breeds graze today.

Experience the annual Roman festival
Every August, the park is transformed into a lively Roman city. Around 600 participants in authentic clothing will demonstrate ancient crafts, camp life and gladiator fights over two days. At about 50 market stalls you can eat dishes according to Roman recipes and lend a hand yourself in hands-on activities.
