Intro

From a stroll around the old town to the hiking trail, the city of Chur, with its local mountain Brambrüesch, has nature right on its doorstep. Hiking trails, meadows filled with flowers and cycling routes can all be reached in no time at all via cable car.

There is hardly any other city in Switzerland where the city and nature can be found as close to one another as they are in Chur. A stroll through the pretty old town before or after an adventure in the midst of nature is easy and an obvious choice to make, since it’s so close by.

The view is full of variety – first drawing your eye across the city of Chur into the Chur Rhine Valley and to the Calanda, then from Piz Beverin to the Heinzenberg, the Safierberge mountains to the Vorab, the Lenzerheide region and into the Schanfigg valley. The boundary stone at the summit that marks the shared border point of the three former Rhaetian confederations is less than a two-hour hike away. The trail continues past this point, often along scenic ridges that lead towards Feldis or Churwalden/Lenzerheide.

There are also shorter hikes to enjoy, however – leading to the “Spundisköpf” viewpoint, for example. The “Bergbaiz” restaurant, with its spacious sun terrace and playground, invites you to linger a while either before or after your exertions.

Alternatively, if you prefer to grill your own sausages, you’ll find a well-equipped barbecue area here, along with a drinking fountain offering fresh drinking water. The “Moorparcours Riedboden” moorland trail is located right beside the restaurant, offering visitors of all ages the chance to learn about this special biotope.

The two cable cars have been offering access to this recreation area since 1957/58, the upper section initially being fitted with the elegant two-man gondolas (bubbles), and in the summer, open two-man cabins too. In the winter, ski lifts take skiers all the way up to the Dreibündenstein.

Tip: Discounts with the Guest Card

Even if they are only staying for one night, visitors to Chur can enjoy numerous benefits thanks to the Guest Card: half-price tickets for the mountain railway to Brambrüesch, free use of public transport, free entry to the museum, and many other discounts besides.

Adventure highlight

There’s a whole lot to experience on Chur’s local mountain, the Brambrüesch, such as bike boarding, mountain boarding and dirt surfing – not to mention extended mountain bike tours (on SwitzerlandMobility). Special highlights include the freeride trails in Alpenbikepark Chur, the venue for the 2009 Swiss Mountain Bike and Downhill Championships.

Bike Kingdom

With its Alpenbikepark, the “2 RIDE Touren” bike ticket and the many other opportunities for bike tours, Chur’s local mountain is an official part of the BIKE KINGDOM of Switzerland. Chur has partnered with Lenzerheide and Arosa as part of this initiative.
