The Clock Tower Zytglogge at a glance
The medieval clock tower has stood in the heart of Bern's old town since the 13th century. After a fire in 1405, it was converted into a clock tower. The clockwork from 1530 drives the famous play of figures with a bear train, jester and crowing rooster. On the hour, onlookers gather in front of the tower.
What to experience
Watch the Puppet Play
Stand in front of the Zytglogge clock tower just before the hour. First the golden rooster crows, then the fool rings his bells. Bears dance in circles while Chronos, the god of time, turns his hourglass. At the end, "Hans von Thann" strikes the hour bell at the top of the tower.
- Good to know: The game starts 4 minutes before the hour.
- Tip: Stand back a bit to see the golden hour beater at the top of the tower.
Guided tour of the tower (1 hour)
Climb 130 steps inside the tower and observe the clockwork from 1530. Thick stone walls and heavy wooden beams surround the medieval mechanics. You will see the gears that drive the puppet game and climb to the viewing platform with a view over the old town and the Bernese Alps.
- Good to know: Maximum 19 people per guided tour. Advance booking required.
- Tip: Combine the Zytglogge guided tour with the UNESCO Old Town stroll.
Contemplating the Astrolabe
The astrolabe of the tower shows much more than the time: The astronomical calendar clock from 1530 depicts months, moon phases, signs of the zodiac as well as sunrise and sunset. Gold hands rotate on intricately crafted discs, indicating the date and day of the week.
- Good to know: In the gateway, the "Bärner Zytfänschter" explains how it works.
