The old town of Chur at a glance

Chur is located in the canton of Graubünden and is one of the oldest cities in Switzerland with a settlement history of over 5000 years. The car-free old town impresses with winding alleys, picturesque squares and historic buildings. Above it towers the episcopal court with the Cathedral of St. Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

What to experience

Walk through the alleys

Follow the red signs from the Obertor through winding alleys to the picturesque Arcas Square. Along the way, you'll pass historic guild houses, boutiques and cafés. You can refresh and rest at the city's many public fountains. By the way, the water is drinkable.

  • Tip: Try specialties such as capuns or pizokel in one of the old town restaurants.

Cathedral and Episcopal Court

Climb up to the Bishop's Court and enter the 800-year-old Cathedral of St. Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The late Gothic high altar with 153 carved figures and the stained glass windows by Augusto Giacometti from 1919 leave lasting impressions. From the terrace you can enjoy a wide view over the city.

  • Good to know: During the masses, the cathedral is not accessible.

Graubünden Art Museum (1–2 hours)

Visit the Graubünden Art Museum in the historic Villa Planta with its modern extension. The collection comprises around 8000 works and shows highlights of the Giacometti family of artists as well as works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. In the garden there is a sculpture by HR Giger, the Chur-born artist and Oscar winner for the film "Alien".

  • Good to know: Children and young people up to 16 years of age have free admission.
  • Tip: Visit the Giger Bar in the Kalchbühl Centre with its surreal décor.
