Egg Bike
Overview
Intro
This medium-difficulty tour leads from the Linth plain into the foothills of the Speer, a pyramid of conglomerate rock. The route culminates with the town of Egg, at 1204 metres above sea level.
Description
After gliding into the Linth area (which is as flat as a pancake), you will reach Steinenbrugg, part of Kaltbrunn, where the longest climb of this tour begins. A narrow strip of tarmac winds its way up through over 900 metres of steep grassland. The route offers up beautiful views of the Linth plain, Lake Zürich and the Glarus and Schwyz Alps here.
You are now in the foothills of the Speer. This striking elevation, which keeps cropping up throughout the tour, is Europe’s highest conglomerate rock mountain at 1951 metres. At the Schänerwiti the path crosses the Wengibach. You will find yourself surrounded by waterfalls, gorges, gnarled pine trees and glacial boulders: in this idyll in the alpine foothills it is well worth giving your legs a bit of a break.
A relatively gentle descent takes you to Rieden and Uetliburg, where the second climb awaits. Here, too, most of the climb is covered on one small road that winds upwards over grassland. Shortly before reaching the 1204m high Egg, you also cover gravel tracks and paths. The rest of the route is a very steep, rapid downhill run down into the Linth plain.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
