Intro

Another perspiring session, the Sattelegg, a lovely mosaic landscape with an Alpine panorama, then deep below flat countryside, a transit region for power and traffic, spatial improvement in a clinch with farming tradition, dog walkers and warehouses.

Description

This makes cycling fun: you ride through the attractive Rickental Valley in the sunshine. Take another look back at the dammed Sihlsee lake and the Willer Zell Viaduct – and then plunge into the forest. At the start, you are accompanied by the gently gurgling Rickentalbach stream and the three-kilometre-long Mieseggbach stream. The Sattelegg is just under 1,200 metres high, but it is demanding enough. Alpine religious services take place several times a year in the chapel on the pass.

Together with other “Gümmelern” (cyclists) you can enjoy a superb view in the heart of stunning nature on the terrace of the mountain restaurant. Mixed deciduous and fir forests alternate with hilly pastures. The young red kites provide an incredible natural spectacle: After a few rounds they let themselves fall, still somewhat clumsily, into the branches of the tall deciduous trees. Even the brown cows on the lush meadow are amazed.

Depending on the season, wild garlic also smells incredible. Below, in the March plain, the landscape is reflected in Upper Lake Zurich. The Alpine panorama looks benign from up here. It curves rapidly down to Siebnen, the spread-out town in the canton of Schwyz through which the Wägitaler Aa river flows. This also allows the Wägital power plant to generate electricity. The monumental building was constructed between 1922 and 1926 and was the largest pumped storage power plant in the world at the time. Chugging along the motorway, you follow the canal to Tuggen. Storks, amphibians, insects, small crustaceans, dragonflies, grass snakes and kingfishers feel at home in the Linth Plain thanks to the stagnant waters of the Old Linth River. There is chattering, quacking, twittering and chirping.

It is good to take a break and look out over the wide plain between Lake Zurich and Lake Walen. You can also stop at Grynau Castle: once a customs office, seat of power, theatre of war and bridgehead, it is now a popular destination for excursions. The Linth roars next to it, and the motorway is just a stone’s throw away. Many young people enjoy the sun and bathing in the river here. You can, too: taking a refreshing dip in the Linth isn’t the worst idea before you head towards your destination of Uznach along the noisy road.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
