Inneralp Vorderalp Bike
Overview
Intro
The back end of Obersaxen is wild, rough and steep. That is in line with the character of this sometimes energy-sapping route. It's just the ticket for those who fancy sun-kissed alpine roads, a long climb, and varied single trails.
Description
The remote back end of Obersaxen is little known to many mountain bikers – unjustly so. Here you will find a mixture of scenic alpine roads, challenging climbs and varied single trails. The picturesque Val Gronda is remarkable with its steep slopes, wild mountain streams and, last but not least, seemingly endless single trails through the Alpine landscape.
The trail zigzags between small alpine huts up into the Wali. Going gently up and down, you cross mountain streams and moorlands before the trail enters the Nallwald forest. Once you have crossed the Lumbreiner bridge, you need to start pedalling again. The last 600 metres up to Alp Gren require good fitness.
During the ascent, the views of the steep mountain flank on the opposite side of the valley are impressive.
Once you have arrived at Alp Gren, you can enjoy the views from Val Gronda to the Vorderrhein Valley. The breather up here is well deserved, with almost 1,200 vertical metres in your legs. The mountain panorama is fantastic, and the tranquillity of the little-used mountain valley is just as impressive. With a bit of luck, you can catch the whistling of marmots breaking the silence.
The mainly flat passage between Alp Gren and Vorderalp is a particular highlight. On the traverse along the slope's edge, the view widens over the Surselva. The trail through the alpine landscape, with its steep grassy slopes and dark forests on the valley floor, combines technical riding, thrills and magnificent views.
At Vorderalp, the landscape becomes gentler. Alpine pastures line up next to each other, and in between, you can discover wooden stables darkened by the sun. Again and again, you cross small mountain streams and pass through the moorlands of this sun-kissed high plateau.
From Vorderalp, a varied single trail leads downhill in several serpentines. On the home stretch, about four kilometres before Obersaxen, you pass the Schwarzenstein castle ruins. Only an inconspicuous sign at the side of the trail points to it. Nevertheless, it's well worth a visit. Significant parts of the castle are still recognisable today, and the views of the Vorderrhein valley floor and the Brigelserhörner are spectacular.
