Panorama Bike
Overview
Intro
A continual up and down high above the Thunersee lake heading west. The mighty Eiger, Mönch & Jungfrau massif soon appears. Well-kept houses, snowy summits and a lake landscape form the classic picture-postcard paradise.
Description
Habkern is a small holiday resort in the Bernese Oberland. It includes a large forested and mountain area on the southern face of the Hohgant around the headwaters of the Emme river. The hilly Emmental valley extends on one side, with Lake Brienz and Lake Thun on the other.
Then comes the first climb. After gaining a little elevation, you can already see Lake Brienz and the Faulhorn behind it. A little further along, above Waldegg, an impressive panoramic view opens up of the Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau, Finsteraarhorn and other peaks. They seem close enough to touch and it's tempting to take a break after just five kilometres.
The gentle climb through the Dälewald forest is followed by a fast-paced descent to Schmocken. After the tunnel, you suddenly have a magnificent view across Lake Thun. The trail now takes you into the Justistal valley. Paragliders use the thermal updrafts between the rock faces of the Niederhorn and the Sigriswiler Rothorn. Red deer have been native here since 1980. They use the valley as a rutting ground. Ibex, golden eagles and lynx are also found here.
The valley is followed by a gentle climb. Meadows with cows and sheep, the shimmering blue Lake Thun and the Alpine panorama again look stunning. If you don't want to carry your bike, you can take the short detour around Moosgrabe. However, this does involve a change in elevation of around 50 metres. This makes the bench an all-the-more-welcome place to rest. It's the last opportunity to enjoy the view before you go into the hinterland. While there are no more 4,000-metre peaks here, the Stockhorn, Gantrisch and Niesen look almost as lovely.
The roughly 15 kilometres to Steffisburg wind through hilly, agricultural country. Beautifully situated individual farms, meadows, fruit trees and brief stretches of woodland line the descent. Passing a residential area, the trail branches to the left towards Thun. With the Aare river in sight, you soon reach the town with its majestic castle. The beautiful old town, the lake and the Alpine backdrop also make it a perfect place to stop and linger.
