Starting in the Bad Zurzach wellness oasis, the stage leads to Koblenz, the historic old town with 4 bridges close to the Klingnau reservoir. The Rheinfelden destination - Switzerland's oldest Zähringer town - follows soon after the picturesque little town of Laufenburg.
Description
If you happen to be in Bad Zurzach with your kids, there is no way to avoid Papa Moll. The protagonist of a comic strip - a family man with just five hairs - is sure to delight all the children in the local “Papa Moll-Land”.
A number of wooden towers are located at Rietheimer Moos. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Swiss soda works were mining salt here, but the production was shut down in the 1960s. Nowadays it’s all about energy: eleven power plants are taming the Upper Rhine between Schaffhausen and Basel. And yet, the river quietly and powerfully flows along the riverside paths, asparagus fields, half-timbered homes, and Roman ruins. In Koblenz the Rhine meets up with the Aare River. Until the two gigantic waterways merge, the latter carries even more water than the former.
The customs station in Koblenz is another hustling and bustling place. After briefly checking out the Giriz nature conservation area we enjoy a beautiful section of the route heading in the direction of Leibstadt. In Full you will hear the roosters crowing across the farms and watch the steam from the nuclear power plant dimming the sky. The time of rail services in Leibstadt is gone. The town had its own train station for over 100 years. A sign on the side of the road says: “It was a wistful day for the people of Leibstadt when their train station was shut down in 1995”. It is a quiet and pleasant ride through the beautiful wetlands near Schwaderloch and soon Laufenburg is in sight. Surrounded by wooded river banks, located at a river bend, it is certainly one of the loveliest towns on the Upper Rhine. The Laufen Bridge alone, first officially mentioned in 1207, is worth the trip. Between Kaisten and Stein you travel past the Holcim cement factory where the gravel is sparkling in the bright sun.
Near Wallbach you will see a lot of small rubber rafts on the Rhine. The care of the river banks is important here and the Swiss are connected with the people of Wallbach, Germany by means of a ferry. Just before Möhlin you come to the “Chräbis” fisherman’s guildhall. It is also a restaurant on certain days, offering delicious fish, filets and whole pike. Hazelnut and blackberry bushes will delight the bikers as they ride through refreshing forested areas between Wallbach and Möhlin, but not much is left of the Roman watchtower in Möhlin-Untere Wehren, except its southern wall. And finally there is Rheinfelden, the oldest town in Switzerland founded by the Zähringers, with a large municipal park, a charming medieval town centre – and of course, the Feldschlösschen castle whose beer is now considered a Danish Carlsberg brew, as Feldschlösschen was sold in 2000.
