Rundweg Zermatt
Overview
Intro
A chapel, beautiful bridges and a magical winter forest – this is what the Zermatt circular trail has to offer. Crossing the spectacular Findelbach bridge is among this circular trail's highlights. Spanning the Findelbach river, it has a length of 93 metres and a height of 50 metres.
Description
From the Zermatt railway station, you first stroll along Bahnhofstrasse. Surrounded by 38 4,000-metre peaks, including the Matterhorn, the car-free Walser village is brimming with shops, cosy cafés, restaurants and hotel lounges. In the village's side streets, you can also discover typical old barns and storage huts.
The winter hiking trail first leads to the village's rear section and the Matter Vispa River before ascending to the hamlet of Blatten. Here, the "Maria Rosenkranzkönigin" baroque chapel is well worth a visit. It sits on a small hill, and its interior features a stone cross vault and an altar dating back to the early Baroque period. In 1983, the church was renovated and painted in a reddish colour. A wooden bridge crosses the Gornera river between Blatten and Moos. It's worth looking down because impressive icicles and ice walls often form in the winter cold. The trail then enters the magical winter forest near Moos.
Among the hike's highlights is the spectacular Findelbach bridge. Spanning the river, it has a length of 93 metres and a height of 50 metres. A quick stop to enjoy the views of the gorge and the Matterhorn is a must-do. The last section, also called Pensioner's Trail, leads again through the forest on flat terrain. After that, you descend through the neighbourhood of Oberhäusern into the village. The hike ends back at the railway station.
